Master Carlos Aguilar has studied martial arts since 1970, and has been able to do so under some great martial arts masters. He has competed and judged at national and international martial arts tournaments, and has taught many seminars on empty hand, weapon, and internal sets. Since he opened the New Orleans Kung Fu Academy in 1985, he has taught hundreds of students, many of whom have gone on to compete and place at tournaments nationwide. His generosity and knowledge as a teacher, of both martial arts and “life lessons,” has endeared him to the many students who have had the privilege of training under him.

Shifu David Sherman was already a 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do prior to starting his training in Chinese martial arts under Carlos Aguilar in 1987. During the past 30 years, he has studied under world-renown masters, competed in national and regional tournaments, opened his own kung fu academy, and held seminars on empty hand forms, weapons and chi kung. Shifu David currently trains kung fu students in the Baton Rouge area and travels to New Orleans often to help supervise instruction to students there. When not practicing martial arts, Shifu David helps manage his family’s business, a retail bakery, located here in Baton Rouge.
Shifu Patrick Gensler began studying Chinese martial arts under Shifu David Sherman in 1998. Since then, he has helped teach students in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans area. He has attended empty hand and weapon seminars by world- renown kung fu masters, and competed in regional and national tournaments.
In January of 2014, with the consent of Master Aguilar, Shifu Patrick and Shifu David Sherman began a partnership with the Southside YMCA in Baton Rouge to start a kung fu program at that facility. Shifu Patrick still meets with students in the Baton Rouge area to provide instruction, although the school formally ended its partnership with the YMCA in 2018, after the birth of his son.
When not practicing kung fu, Shifu Patrick enjoys spending time with his wife and son. He works as licensed clinical social worker in Baton Rouge.
